What epoxy resin art is, and why it is on every shelf
If you have spent any time on social media or in decor groups, you have seen this kind of object: a clear figurine with colors that look alive from inside and a finish that is neither plastic nor glass but something in between. It is almost certainly epoxy resin art. This article explains exactly what it is, why it looks the way it does and how it is made by hand.
What is epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin is a polymer material made by mixing two liquid components: the base resin and the hardener. Combined in the right proportions, they start a chemical reaction that turns the liquid mixture into a rigid, clear and very tough solid.
In decorative use, epoxy resin is poured into molds with colored pigments and left to cure for hours or days. The result is a solid piece with a crystal finish that lets light through — which is what gives it that distinctive translucent effect you cannot get with plastic or glass.
The key difference from plastic: industrial plastic is opaque or semi-opaque with a uniform matte or gloss finish. Cured epoxy resin has depth — light enters, bounces around inside the material and leaves differently depending on the angle. That is why resin figurines look like they "glow from within".
Why the translucent finish is special
Epoxy resin objects have an optical quality few materials reproduce: translucency with depth. It is not transparent like glass (you cannot see through the object) and not opaque like plastic. It is something in between — light enters the piece, travels through the inside and creates effects of color and shine that change with where you stand.
This is most striking in figurines with saturated colors — like the Chromara gummy bears or PEZ candy. A blue resin bear is not simply blue: it holds different intensities of blue depending on the light, and backlit it can throw a halo of color you were not expecting.

How you can tell a piece was made by hand
A resin figurine made one at a time never comes out identical to the next, and that is the whole point: the one on your shelf is not exactly the same as anyone else’s. How to care for your epoxy resin figurines
Cured epoxy resin is a very tough material for everyday decorative use, but it helps to know its limits so your figurine lasts for years:
- Cleaning: a soft cloth, slightly damp with water and mild soap. No solvents, acetone or abrasives — they can attack the surface and take the shine off.
- Direct sunlight: prolonged sun exposure can yellow the resin over time. Put your figurine somewhere with indirect or artificial light.
- Heat: epoxy resin has a softening point — do not leave it near strong heat sources (radiators, very sunny windows in summer).
- Knocks: although it handles everyday impact well, a fall from height onto a hard floor can chip it. Keep it on a stable surface.

The applications are broad, but in home decor it stands out especially in:
